As I pour through the research for my research project in my Senior Thesis class, something jumped out at me as if it were a cat ready to pounce on its play toy. People are really obsessed with gayness. It’s 2025, and the fact that some are still in a tizzy over gay people is beyond me. Gays have existed throughout history, and we still have those who challenge their existence and right to live in their truth. Why are people so obsessed about what grown consenting adults do in their bedroom? Me thinks though doth protest too much.
I’m looking at page after page of how some people are willing to excuse and rationalize murder based on sexual preference, and it disgusts me. What causes a man who allegedly follows Jesus Christ to advocate for the senseless murder of Matthew Shepard based on him being a gay man? What causes him to go and rally for the murders instead of on the behalf of an innocent man? Gayness? Is this what religion does? Is this what the negative religious rhetoric creates, a hatemongering low-moral zealot, free of empathy and understanding? Religion was used for the basis of his hate. It was the catalyst.
The same gay Black political issues that James Baldwin so eloquently wrote about 55, 60, 70 years ago are still plaguing us to this day. We are currently fighting for our literal lives and freedoms for things that should have been solidified yesteryear! I research with a chaotic mind and a heavy heart, wondering in 70 years, will my research be looked upon as a thing of the past, or a current issue of its time.
